Climate Zombies Alert

On Friday, September 27th, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will release Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis, Part 1 of its Fifth Assessment Report.  The actual report will be available here on September 30th.

In the run-up to its release, climate zombies around the world have been in panic mode, spreading disinformation, lies and nonsense in an attempt to confuse you as to the clearly established scientific truth about climate change. Warning: do not be fooled by these false reports. They are dangerous to your mental health, and to the health of the planet. More....

Can Earth’s modern economy operate without any fossil fuels?

Can Earth’s modern economy operate without any fossil fuels?

There are plenty on the right who insist that it’s impossible: they’re hooked on coal, oil and fracked shale gas, and to make life easier, they often argue that climate change is just not a problem.

There are plenty on the green left too (yes, there’s a right green, a middle green and a left green) who see peak oil as bringing the collapse of modern civilization, and who see the whole concept of endless economic growth as being completely unsustainable.

But Mark Jacobson from Stanford University has news: they’re both wrong.

These Students are Our Heroes

Yes, students at Walnut Road Elementary in Surrey, for winning the city’s 2012/13 Climate Change Showdown contest. YOU ARE OUR HEROES.

Manpreet Sanghara, teacher of the winning Grade 5/6 class at Walnut Road Elementary says, “I am very proud of my students for taking the time to make positive changes at home to conserve energy. Many students went above and beyond expectations and encouraged their parents to make these changes as well.”

Solar Grid Parity in BC - When will it Happen?

From the first solar cells in 1883 with their 1% efficiency to today’s research lab cells that claim over 40% efficiency, the progress of the solar revolution has been bumpy and often uncomfortable for the major solar players, but it has been nonetheless steady.

Low Carbon Training Wheels: The Elusive World of Carbon Neutrality

In April, BC’s Auditor General stirred the climate change debate with his report on the Pacific Carbon Trust.

In the debate that followed, however, the reason why it matters went missing. The driving reality behind the government’s commitment to carbon-neutral government are those ominous three words  - global climate change.

CLIMATE ACTION NOW

Dear Prospective Member of the BC Legislature,

Please, let’s not beat about the bush.

We know healthcare and education are important, and so are debt-repayment and many other things. But we’re all together on this one small planet, sharing our berths on the Good Ship Civilization, and as a direct result of the fuel we’ve been burning and other careless activities a god-almighty storm is bearing down on us, with the ability to toss our puny boat up in the air and down into the depths, wrecking everything we love and care about, from our children and grandchildren to our forests and food, our furry friends and our future.

The Future of Wind Energy in BC

It seems so natural that BC should be a leader when it comes to wind power. We have such huge resources, especially in BC’s northeast, but we seem to be stuck at 390 MW, compared to over 2,000 MW in Ontario and 1,648 MW in Quebec, which has similar constraints of huge hydro resources and cheap power.

There’s another 548 MW lining up to enter the grid by 2016, for a total of 938 MW, but compared to BC’s total power capacity of 43,000 MW, it’s still small game. In the same timeframe, Quebec will bring on 2500 MW.

And what about those other critical questions?

The Future Includes Cargo-Bikes - Ting-a-ling!

Cargo-Bikes - it’s got a nice ring to it. Ting-a-ling! If you do a Google image search on the phrase you’ll find a wonderful array of cargo-carrying bikes and trikes, from functional to fancy, cute to crazy.

WANTED: Mickey Methane and The Fugitives

No, they’re not a rock band—they’re a planetary emergency, and a danger to us all. Micky Methane is #2 in the Ten Most Wanted Climate Criminals, along with Charlie Carbon, Nellie Nitrous Oxide, Freddie and the F Gases and Billy Black, also known as Sooty. They’re all packing heat, and need to be apprehended.

The Solar Revolution in China – and Canada

It seems far away, but it’s extremely relevant, since the mass adoption of solar PV in China could accelerate the dramatic fall in solar prices.

A year ago, China had a goal to install 5 GW (5,000 MW) of solar PV by 2020 - the equivalent of 2.5 million houses each with a 2kW system. With 5 GW installed in 2012 alone, however, China increased the target to 21 GW by 2015 – and then last week, it increased it further to 40 GW by 2015.
