Tinhorn Creek Vineyards adds to its sustainability practices by becoming the first Canadian winery to complete the Climate Smart program and offset their carbon footprint.
Climate Smart, launched in 2007 and similar to other programs world-wide, teaches business principals to measure, reduce and offset their carbon footprint.
Winemaker Sandra Oldfield and General Manager Shaun Everest participated in the program, fully embracing the values and philosophy, and have taken the winery to a new level of environmental responsibility.
The Climate Smart Program enabled Everest and Oldfield to calculate the total greenhouse gas emissions produced by the winery, target areas to cut emissions with a continued effort towards 100% carbon neutral practices, and finally, offset the carbon footprint with the help of Vancouver based Offsetters, Canada’s premier provider of high quality solutions for individuals and organizations seeking to reduce their climate impact.
This initiative is ongoing with both Climate Smart and Offsetters to reduce carbon footprints on an ongoing basis.
“This type of program is really important to us at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards. We live in the community and believe we need to be stewards of not only the land, but of the environment that we share with our neighbours and our guests. Climate Smart gives us the tools to see where we can reduce our footprint as well as setting goals to increase our efficiency in the future,” states Sandra Oldfield.
Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has been a vanguard in responsible practices since its inception in 1994 and has been recognized by The Land Conservancy as a partner for their ongoing stewardship. They developed systems with South Okanagan-Similkameen Stewardship Program which has led to placing snake fences around the vineyard property to protect visitors, staff and snakes.
Tinhorn Creek has also worked with local community based organizations to re-plant indigenous bushes and grasses. 100% of plant based harvest waste is composted and put back into the property. Glass is imported from as close as Seattle to offset carbon footprints and the winery is working towards more effective irrigation and viticulture procedures.
Offsetters has been helping individuals and organizations understand, reduce, track and offset their greenhouse gas emissions since 2005. Offsetters use carbon offset funds to develop and invest in high-quality, renewable energy and energy efficiency projects that would otherwise not take place.
Their ultimate goal is to create a mainstream shift toward clean energy systems that will get businesses out of the fossil fuel dependence faced today. For project, team, product, and service information, visit www.offsetters.ca
Climate Smart is a Vancouver, British Columbia-based social enterprise and a wholly owned subsidiary of Ecotrust Canada, an enterprising non-profit whose purpose is to build the conservation economy. Climate Smart grew out of the recognition that the engines of local economies - small and medium-sized enterprises - have been largely overlooked in the development of policies and tools to address climate change.
This creative and innovative sector can play an important role in finding ways to do business differently and to help move us toward a prosperous, low carbon future. Tinhorn Creek Vineyards joins companies such as Harbour Air, Rocky Mountaineer and Salt Spring Coffee.
On the hillside overlooking vineyard, sagebrush, and the old gold mining creek that gave the winery its name, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is located just south of Oliver B.C., in the famed Golden Mile wine growing district.
