North Thompson Earthship Tour

Chapter Event
Jun 21 2014 - 12:30pm to 4:30pm

We're going on a road trip! On June 21, BCSEA-Kamloops is coordinating a tour of the first permitted earthship in BC, located in Darfield, an hour's drive north of Kamloops. We'll arrange carpooling with those who sign up. Plan to eat lunch before you go, and we'll meet at 12:30 pm at a location to be determined. We should arrive back in Kamloops by 4:30 pm. There's no charge to participate, but tour capacity is limited to 20 people.

What's an earthship? Here's a hint -- it doesn't fly though space or time. It's a sustainable home for a family of 5 (4 Newtons and a Burkholder), built from earth-filled tires, beverage containers, and mud. While those words may not paint the most appealing mental image, you'll be surprised at how beautiful and comfortable the home is. And you'll LOVE the carbon footprint of this family.

The building uses very little energy to heat or cool. And that's just the beginning. The family is embarking on a major permaculture project that will look after a lot of their own food needs, they drive a van powered by used veggie oil....this trip will be a gold mine of information for sustainability geeks like us.
