Rally for Climate Justice

Community Event
Dec 16 2009 - 11:00am to 2:00pm

A chance to show the local conservative MP we want Canada to take serious action on climate change! There are a number of rallies, vigils, protests, and actions going on across the country this week. We need as many Canadians to take part to send the government, and the rest of the world, the message that Canada cares. We don't want to be climate laggards! Come out and be a part of the message.

RALLY for CLIMATE JUSTICE: Climate change affects us all, and so we stand together

When: Wednesday, December 16th, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm Where: Outside the constituency office of Minister Lunn, 9843 Second Street, Sidney (one block north of Beacon Ave, and about a block from the water)

ISLANDERS FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE

On December 2nd, a group of people calling themselves the Islanders for Climate Justice held a sit-in at the office of Minister Gary Lunn. They called on the Harper government and all parties to immediately commit to fair and binding cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, and they requested that Lunn participate in an on-camera town hall forum with constituents and local youth representatives to explain his party’s position and lack of leadership on the issue.

Gary Lunn said he was too "busy" to meet with his constituents to discuss the Conservative government's policies on climate change. Since then, Canada has won the "fossil of the day" award at the climate negotiations in Copenhagen and continues to block progress towards a fair, ambitious and binding global climate treaty. The Harper government’s media strategy attempts to convince us otherwise, but Canada's inaction on climate change is insufficient, shameful, and is costing lives. Already many parts of Canada are feeling the impacts of climate change, and around the world climate change is causing 300,000 deaths annually and creating millions of environmental refugees and severe ecological damage.

It's time we stand up and demand that our government shows climate leadership, is accountable to the will of Canadians, and stops green-washing with its inadequate, weak targets. Join the Islanders for Climate Justice this coming Wednesday, December 16th, between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, when we return to the office of Minister Gary Lunn to demand that his government take immediate action on climate change.

We are hoping to gather as diverse a group of islanders as possible to represent their concerns. There will be farmers for climate justice, fishermen for climate justice, cyclists for climate justice, grandparents for climate justice, and so on. Let's show our government that we stand together in all our diversity to demand action on climate change now.

What to bring: Warm clothes, raingear, umbrella, signs (we have a few but if you want to make your own that would be excellent)

Organizing: Please spread the word and bring as many people as possible. If you would like to represent a "sector," please email viclimatejustice@gmail.com to let us know what it is. We will be sending out a press release ahead of the rally and want to let the media know just how diverse a group we are. Let us know if you are bringing parents, or faith communities, or health care workers, or any other group impacted by climate change. And if you need a ride, or have space to offer, email viclimatejustice@gmail.com
