Whole-Building LCA Using the Athena Impact Estimator

Training / Education
Apr 8 2017 - 8:30am

This one-day workshop fast tracks life cycle assessment (LCA) education for building design professionals, sustainability consultants and students wishing to have a career in the green building industry. LCA is the key analytical technique for reducing the embodied environmental impact of the built environment and it is the basis of a new credit in LEED v4. Embodied impacts are the lifetime environmental burdens from the building due to resource extraction, product manufacturing, construction, maintenance, and eventual demolition. Embodied impacts constitute a significant portion of a building’s total carbon footprint and account for the majority of a building’s impact in areas such as air and water pollution.
Part of this course will include hands-on exercises using the free Athena Impact Estimator for Buildings, a simplified LCA software tool created specifically for use by architects, engineers and sustainable design consultants. The course will take place in a computer lab, so you will not need to bring your own computer.

This course will be delivered by Rob Sianchuk of the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute.
