The Kamloops Chapter of the BC Sustainable Energy Association invites the public to our AGM, which will take place on October 18, 2017, 7-9pm, in room 1792 of the Old Main Building at Thompson Rivers University. Our focus for the evening is Reducing Waste – There is No Planet B. We’re happy to be part of Canada’s Waste Reduction Week.
After a very short business meeting, we will welcome two speakers:
- Marcia Dick, of the City of Kamloops, who will talk about what an individual can do to reduce waste and recycle, and
- Cassandra Enns, of the TNRD, who will talk about what is currently happening and what is proposed for waste management in the region (draft solid waste management plan.)
A Q & A period will follow each talk.
One may wonder why the waste reduction theme when our mandate is ‘sustainable energy’. Our aim is to open a conversation about sustainable energy, but from a slightly different angle, often overlooked in our busy day-to-day lives. We have all heard that ‘everything is energy around us’ and, philosophy aside, that is true to a fault. Every single object we use, and every bite of food that reaches our plate, are made available using different amounts of energy.
From harvesting natural resources, to manufacturing, to growing food, to transporting goods and food from one place to another, the amount of energy that makes our lives possible is staggering. Much of that energy gets wasted due to our disposable, ‘throw away’ societal lifestyle, hence the topic of our talks for this year’s AGM. Reducing our carbon footprint means reducing the energy footprint by rethinking our buying habits (avoiding excessive packaging, buying used, minimizing possessions, or repurposing when possible). This also challenges us to take another look at what we throw away, objects and food alike, and even further, it leads us to wondering what happens to all that wasted energy we send away as ‘solid waste.’
