The Solar Laundry Project Short Video Contest

The Kamloops Chapter of the BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) is delighted to announce that The Solar Laundry Project will run again in 2013 – with a twist.

“We’re building on the momentum and interest from last year by going bigger and better,” says James Gordon, a member of the Kamloops Chapter and one of the organizers. “We’re launching a video contest with exciting cash prizes as part of the campaign this year.” Everyone is welcome to create a 30 or 60 second video – the only requirement is that they promote the use of clothes lines. “We’re open to documentaries, animations, spoofs – anything as long as it’s funny!” says Gordon. Details of the video contest can be found here.

The Solar Laundry Project has grown in terms of sponsorship as well. "We’re really excited that the City has joined us as an official sponsor this year," says Gisela Ruckert, vice-chair of the Chapter. "This campaign is just a natural fit for the City, since it promotes energy awareness and supports the goals of the Sustainable Kamloops Plan." BC Hydro, also interested in reducing energy use, has signed on as the major sponsor again this year.

Why are we doing this, you might ask? Because we think it makes good sense! Electric clothes dryers are the most electricity-intensive of any household appliance – and it’s often unnecessary to use them, especially in BC’s Southern Interior. Kamloops naturally enjoys perfect drying weather. Using a clothesline can allow residents to reduce annual energy bills by $50 – and that’s based on hanging clothes outside only half the time! Sun drying clothes reduces wear and tear, naturally disinfects them, and eliminates the need to go near the dreaded lint filter! You’ll also get that "fresh breeze" scent as a thank you bonus, direct from Mother Nature – no chemicals required.

Residents will be able to enter online to win a clothesline starting at the end of April. For more information about The Solar Laundry Project, please contact Gisela Ruckert at 250-318-6483 or e-mail kamloops@bcsea.org.
