Climate Change Showdown Awards

The Kamloops Chapter of the BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) is delighted to announce this year’s winners in the Climate Change Showdown program, offered in partnership by the City of Kamloops and BCSEA. Top-scoring students will be honoured at the Kamloops City Council meeting Tuesday June 11, 2013 at 3:00 pm. The students learned about climate change in class and then worked on contest actions with their families over a four-week period. They reduced greenhouse gas emissions through eating local foods, turning down the thermostat, taking shorter showers and turning off the lights.

The Joy Bouwmeester / Giorsa Campbell Grade 3/4 class at Beattie School of the Arts achieved the top class score in Kamloops. The class will celebrate their win with a pizza party later this month. This is the second year in a row that Mrs. Bouwmeester’s class has earned top honours in Kamloops.

Individual student winners are:

  • First: Shannae Jaccard, in teacher Tiffany Hawkins’s class at Summit Elementary, with 4400 points.
  • Second: Max Maki, in teacher Joy Bouwmeester/Giorsa Campbell’s class at Beattie School of the Arts, with 4125 points.
  • Third, a tie among four students all achieving 4100 points and listed alphabetically by last name:
    • Amber Carter, in teacher Joy Bouwmeester/Giorsa Campbell’s class at Beattie School of the Arts;
    • Czarina Choy, in teacher Gino Covaceuszach’s class at Kay Bingham Elementary;
    • Rochelle Gunendra, in teacher Margaret Langevin’s class at St. Ann’s Academy;
    • Ayden Norton, in teacher Joy Bouwmeester/Giorsa Campbell’s class at Beattie School of the Arts.

These six students, who include three representatives from the winning class, are invited to join Council at the June 11 meeting for awards and recognition.

34 classes participated in the program this year, a three-fold jump over previous years! Amanda Wells, City of Kamloops Environmental Educator, recruited teachers who had never participated before and inspired students to give the contest their best efforts.

The BCSEA Kamloops Chapter thanks Ms. Wells for her contribution; teachers Carolyn Eagles, Rose Grace/Jennifer Sjokvist and Steve Bloom, who achieved extraordinary contest return rates; and all participating students for their hard work and dedication to this program. They are all Climate Heroes!

BCSEA offers the Climate Change Showdown program to grades 4 through 7 students throughout British Columbia. For information about the program, see www.bcsea.org/ccs
