As we emerge from the 1-year anniversary of the first pandemic restrictions in BC, we find ourselves in a unique position to reflect on the past and look to the future. Despite all the challenges of the past year, BCSEA has remained very active and adapted to our new circumstances remarkably well. Although in-person events had to be canceled or curtailed, the various webinars of the past year proved to be quite popular and well attended. The Cool-It! program made the successful transition to deliver online programs, putting itself in a stronger position once in-person classroom instruction returns in full force. And BCSEA’s involvement in BC Utilities Commission hearings continued with vigor, leading to several positive outcomes for all British Columbians. (For further details, look to the Policy Corner on BCSEA’s website.)
This time has also been a unique opportunity to revisit our strategic planning goals. Indeed the Board, Chapters, and key stakeholders held a number of strategic planning workshops in the past several months in preparation for a Special General Meeting of BCSEA’s membership. With a sharper strategic focus, BCSEA is poised to be even more effective in advocating for sustainable solutions for all British Columbians, as well as serving as a central educational resource.
In the past year, we also saw the broader conversation on climate change and sustainability take on a more prominent role. Various provincial and federal initiatives were announced addressing some of these issues. As the boom in home renovations progressed throughout the past year, no doubt motivated by people stuck in their homes, the BC government announced several programs to help homeowners access information and rebates on more efficient and sustainable options. Federal carbon pricing is a step in the right direction and an important acknowledgement of the economic impacts of climate change.
All of these signals point to renewed interest in achieving a sustainable economy. Change is around the corner. Spring is here. To be part of this great work, I encourage you to become a member of the BCSEA today. As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to send us a note to firstname.lastname@example.org.
