With all the buzz around BC’s organic farming and craft beer brewing, we often miss excitement going on in the other provinces. In October 2017, a partnership between Beau’s Brewery and Bullfrog Power helped the Just Food farm near Ottawa to get on solar. The 10 kW solar array project was launched in October 2017 in the form of a rain or shine community event, where local food and beer was offered. The farm has been active since 2012 and focuses on promoting a healthy food economy, vibrant and economically viable farming sector, and cost-effective model of conservation and land stewardship built on scientifically based agro-ecological practices.

  • Just Food is a grassroots, non-profit organization, focused on community based projects promoting a healthy local food economy
  • Beau’s  is a family owned, community driven company dedicated to brewing certified organic beer.
  • Bullfrog Power is Canada’s leading green energy provider, offering renewable energy solutions and helping individuals and businesses to reduce their environmental impact through developing renewable energy projects in Canada.

We asked Bullfrog Power a few questions about the project.

BCSEA: How was the community celebration received? Was it as successful as you expected?

Bullfrog Power: It was a great success, despite rainy weather. There were live performances, hay rides, and a farmer’s market onsite. Representatives from Bullfrog Power were onsite to answer questions about the project/partnership. Beau’s Brewery was there to give samples of their latest brews.

BCSEA: What was the biggest challenge in getting the project started?

Bullfrog Power: Getting approvals from the utility providers to actually hook up the project to the grid. How did they overcome this? This just took time and preparedness.

BCSEA: Can we look forward to future partnerships between Beau’s Brewery and Bullfrog?

Bullfrog Power: The launch of this project is a great way for Beau’s and Bullfrog Power to give back to the local community in Ottawa. It’s important to note, too, that Beau’s is making a broader commitment to its customers, employees and the environment by choosing 100% green electricity and 100% green natural gas for its brewery in Vankleek Hill to reduce its environmental impact. Beau’s also chooses Bullfrog’s green fuel for two of their distribution trucks, making them the only brewery in Canada committed to a 3-scope carbon emissions solution with Bullfrog Power. We look forward to creatively working together in the future!
