Meeting
February 5, 2008 - BCSEA Vancouver Chapter Meeting & Special Presentation
The presentation was held at the John Braithwaite Community Centre - this
space was generously provided by the City of Vancouver. Included in the
presentation was a tour of the LEC boiler plant in the basement of the JBCC.
The Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC) is a state-of-the-art heating system
that delivers high efficiency energy to its customers. Through a network
of underground piping and boiler mini-plants, LEC circulates hot water to
heat the buildings that are connected to its system. Cost effective, flexible,
convenient, and self sustaining, the award-winning LEC represents a greener
way to improve community livability. LEC is considering the big picture
when it comes to energy use. The growing energy gap and global energy crisis
demand innovative solutions like district energy systems. As an early pioneer
of this service, LEC has great potential to become a sustainable source
of energy for the future.
Presenters included Darrell Mussatto, Mayor of City of North Vancouver;
Glenn Stainton, General Manager of LEC; Ben Themens, Controller of LEC;
and Jennifer Sanguinetti , Principal Stantec Consulting Ltd.

"Advanced Renewable Tariffs: A European Solution to a BC Problem"
with Thomas Vlcek, Royal Roads MBA candidate.
How can BC replicate the success of European countries have had adding
large amounts of clean, sustainable energy to their energy mix? Thomas Vlcek
presented information on the applicability of Advanced Renewable Tariffs
as a means of helping BC Hydro procure private, renewable electricity. Thomas
examined the success of feed-law, tender and quota methods of private procurement
in Europe. He also spoke on the success of recent Calls for Power in BC
and identified challenges/issues facing Independent Power Production in
this province along with an examination of ART's in Europe and the likely
cost of implementing them in BC. The entire presentation was placed within
the context of the province's 2002 and 2007 Energy Plans.

June 7, 2006- Transport Revolutions
The lives of people around the world, particularly in developed countries,
depend on inexpensive movement of people and goods. Transport is becoming
much more expensive, chiefly because ofrising fuel prices, but also because
of costly pollution controls and enhanced security procedures. To address
these issues, the BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) presented a
forum featuring Anthony Perl, a Professor at SFU in the Urban Studies Program,
and Richard Gilbert, a Transportation Consultant to the Organization
for Economic Cooperation and Development.
In addition to speaking about their current literary collaboration, Perl
and Gilbert described the challenges that arise from our dependence on fossil
fueled transportation and the end of cheap oil, and proposed possible responses
to ensure that the effective, secure movement of people and goods continues
- in ways that minimize environmental impacts and make the best use of renewable
sources of energy.
