Applause for emissions law
and new Climate Team
VICTORIA - The BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA)
has responded positively to legislation announced today that
would compel the province as a whole to reduce emissions that
contribute to global warming and make the BC government carbon
neutral.
"We certainly want to applaud this government for setting
ambitious, indeed aggressive, greenhouse gas reduction targets,
and for leading by example," said Tom Hackney, BCSEA
vice president. "This is an historic pronouncement, and
it should recognized as such."
The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act (Bill 44) legislates
a schedule of reductions in British Columbia's greenhouse
gas emissions (GHG) and requires all provincial government
operations, including schools, universities, health authorities
and other public sector organizations, to become carbon neutral
by 2010.
The BCSEA also welcomed the announcement of the 22-person
blue ribbon Climate Action Team to consult with government
on steps to further reduce BC's contribution to global climate
change. Among the team is Naomi Devine, a BCSEA director and
active member of Common Energy.
"Naomi is a tremendous addition to this distinguished
panel," BCSEA president Guy Dauncey commented. "We
are pleased to extend our support and assistance to the Climate
Action Team's deliberations."
The BCSEA is a non-profit society that facilitates the transition
to a sustainable energy future through education, advocacy
and tangible community projects. BCSEA is a leading voice
for energy solutions, such as renewable energy, energy conservation
and efficiency, to address climate change, pollution and the
consequences of peak oil. The Association has eight regional
chapters and hundreds of members across British Columbia.
