Fact of the Month

Quote/Unquote:

"As parliamentarians, we have to stand on platforms around the planet and explain to electors …why the forest is burning, the cattle are dying, …why there is surf in the High Street. To explain …that these are not Acts of God, but Acts of Man."

BCSEA asks Premier Campbell to set aside Bill 30

Victoria, BC-The BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) has written to BC premier Gordon Campbell to ask that amendments to the Utilities Commission Act be set aside until further discussion can take place between affected parties.

"We believe Bill 30 may prove more harmful than beneficial to responsible projects by causing overall harm to the public perception of green power projects," said BCSEA director Naomi Devine.

Writing in support of a City of Victoria resolution, also endorsed by a majority of the 220 members of the Union of BC Municipalities, the BCSEA warned that the removal of local authority over zoning of independent power projects will lead to mistrust.

This bill passed third reading in the Legislature earlier this week as Bill 30 - Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act No. 2, but has yet to receive royal assent.

"Considerable public concern has been expressed about the content and the process by which this bill has arrived at this stage," said BCSEA director Geza Vamos. "The government should put this bill on hold and return to discussions with the UBCM, citizens groups and the public to get this important legislation right."
