Youth Climate Leadership Alliance (YCLA)
Volunteer Positions

Who: Youth Climate Leadership Alliance (YCLA) is looking for volunteers of all ages who are concerned about climate change, and want to take direct action to help achieve B.C.'s goal of reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 2007 levels by 33% by 2020, and 80% by 2050

What: The YCLA’s Idle-Free Ambassador Project, an initiative of the provincial government of British Columbia, needs volunteers to assist with public outreach, street-level surveying and data collection on vehicle idling.
This project is a key component of the Provincial Idle-Reduction Initiative, a province-wide public-awareness campaign aimed at getting drivers to change their habits in order to decrease the amount of time spent idling engines. The initiative addresses issues of climate change, health and air quality, other environmental concerns and fuel economy.

When: Summer 2008 and beyond.

Where: The following regions in British Columbia: Sea-To-Sky Corridor, Metro Vancouver, the Cariboo region, Courtenay-Comox, the Skeena region, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, Prince George and the Kootenays.

Why: Research indicates that Canadian motorists idle their vehicles for an average of five to 10 minutes a day. Idling is a health risk, wastes fuel and money, contributes unnecessarily to engine wear and generates needless GHG emissions. If every driver of a light-duty vehicle in Canada avoided idling for just five minutes a day, we would collectively save 1.8 million litres per day of fuel, $1.7 million in fuel costs everyday, 4500 tonnes of GHG emissions daily, and 8 tonnes of smog daily.

Changing people’s habits is fundamental to the success of the Idle-Free Ambassadors project. It is individual action that will make the greatest impact on this collective problem. Idling is also a gateway issue: once people begin to change their driving habits, they may become more aware of, and open to, further actions to address air quality and climate change.

Required Qualifications:

  • an eagerness to take action on climate change and air quality issues.
  • a willingness to learn and teach basic information about vehicle emissions and the idle-free ambassador program
  • ability to record data and approach members of the public in a professional manner

To apply please send an email stating your name, contact information and the area you want to volunteer in to idlefree@gov.bc.ca
