The Push for a Green Economy and Climate Sanity
YOUR presence will tell Stephen Harper that we need to quickly shift to a green economy based on renewable energy and green jobs – NOT continuing along the deadly path of supporting dirty fossil fuels, the Alberta tar sands, and global warming...
Send a strong message to Harper that the G20 summit of the world’s most powerful nations that Canada is hosting this June is a vital chance to strengthen the international climate agreement that came out of Copenhagen last December - otherwise the next UN Climate Summit (COP 16) in Mexico this fall may simply entrench or enshrine an inadequate agreement that will guarantee runaway global warming!
Speakers:
- Dr. Andrew Weaver – UVic Professor of Earth and Ocean Sciences, IPCC Nobel Prize Winner, Author of “Keeping our Cool: Canada in a Warming World”
- Guy Dauncey – President of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, Author of “The Climate Challenge: 101 Solutions to Global Warming”
- Lisa Matthaus –Environmental Economist, Former Sierra Club of BC Campaigns Director
- Elizabeth May – National Leader of the Green Party of Canada, Co-author of “Global Warming for Dummies”
From June 25-27, the government of Canada is hosting the G8 and G20 summits in Ontario to discuss a wide range of issues. Collectively, the G20 nations account for 85% of the world’s Gross National Product and the vast majority of its greenhouse gas emissions.
So far the Harper government which determines the G20 agenda has been working to keep climate change out of the negotiations, despite the presence of the world’s main industrial polluters including the US, China, India, Russia, Japan, Germany, and Brazil, and despite pressure from the European Union and United Nations to feature climate change in the negotiations.
While most nations including the US, China, and European Union nations are aggressively moving to create incentives to bolster the renewable energy and conservation sectors, the Harper government was ranked nearly last among wealthy nations for its deficient green stimulus expenditures and has recently cut support for the wind power sector and the EcoEnergy home retrofit program.
