Please join us on Monday for a presentation by Tom Hackney on the new Clean Energy Act. Also featured will be a brief review of the implications of inconsistent estimates of future oil production/consumption by Bruce Mackenzie.
The new Clean Energy Act was passed on June 3rd amid considerable controversy, including claims it would increase electricity rates, export power at a loss and continue a "gold rush" of energy developments without adequate environmental protection.
The Clean Energy Act brings profound changes to electricity policy and regulation in BC. It makes legally explicit the government's long-time vision of BC as a "green" electricity exporter, and raises issues about existing users entitlement to low rates. There are big changes to the processes to review BC Hydro's electricity resource, cutting out the BC Utilities Commission and possibly reducing stakeholder involvement. These issues and more will be discussed in depth.
Tom is a policy specialist. He leads the BCSEA participation in Utilities Commission proceedings, develops and advocates BCSEA's policies and is especially interested in finding what will best stimulate society and the body politic to make the big changes that will put us on the road to sustainability.
