West Kootenay

The West Kootenay Chapter was formed in July, 2007 and has held a number of great events and meetings since then.

Our recent efforts with the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST), Selkirk College and FortisBC to bring a world class energy conference to our region has been very rewarding. Our founding chapter members have a strong interest and diverse skills in green building and sustainable communities. A great example of this is the recent field trip to Bright Ridge Farm. Other tours, workshops and events have focused on climate change, run-of-river and micro hydro, the Columbia River Treaty, solar PV, geoexchange heating and cooling, and electric vehicles. The West Kootenay chapter does not meet on a monthly basis, but does hold occasional events and field trips throughout the year. Please contact us for more information.

Cancun Can - and Cancun Did

It was a big surprise to everyone, since the delegates arriving at the big UN climate conference in Cancun, Mexico, did so with such low hopes.

A year ago, they left Copenhagen feeling defeated, worried that the whole multilateral global approach to tackling climate change was doomed to failure.

A year went by. Unprecedented floods, fires and heat-waves came and went, exactly as the science of climate change predicted. The climate-deniers’ confidence that climate change was a conspiratorial fraud grew in leaps and bounds. In November, Americans elected a Congress dominated by Republican climate-skeptics.

So what happened to change everything?
