Fact of the Month

Quote/Unquote:

"Our children and grandchildren are going to be mad at us for burning all this oil. It took the Earth 500 million years to create the stuff we’re burning in 200 years. Renewable energy sources are where we need to be headed."
- Jack Edwards, Professor of Geology, University of Colorado

Canadian Youth Climate Coalition Summit: Let's Invite the Elephant Into the Room
University of Alberta, Edmonton AB

Join us in building a national youth movement to confront one of the largest issues of our time: climate change.

Alberta's Tar Sands are the big elephant in the room. Our government is talking about taking real action on climate change without ever questioning the merit of the massive development in the tar sands as if there is no contradiction between the two. In 2007, CYCC Council flagged the tar sands as an area where we need to focus our learning.

It will be a place where we can:

  • Learn the intricacies of the situation in the tar sands at an environmental, social, technical, political and personal level.
  • Understand what activists are already doing on the tar sands issue.
  • Decide on the format and message of a Canadian youth-led tar sands campaign.
  • Get training on media, group building non-violent direct action, social justice and other topics that are essential to our campaign toolkit.
  • Establish a strong western Canada membership base for the CYCC.

2008 Canadian Decentralized Energy Conference
Calgary Telus Convention Centre, Calgary AB

Canada's energy industry is transitioning into a balanced supply mix of centralized and decentralized energy (DE). DE is energy generation at or near the point of use, irrespective of size, technology or fuel used - both off-grid and on-grid. DE brings improved efficiency through reduced line losses and thermal efficiency gains. However, to reach its maximum potential, the DE industry must be supported by up-to-date energy management solutions. Energy policy and regulation along with grid integration are two primary areas of concern. They affect all industry stakeholders and several aspects of the value chain (i.e., utilities, independent power producers, governments, regulators, manufacturers, housing industry).

For information and regstration please visit the conference website.
