A Student's Testimonial

There is nothing more rewarding than getting a non-requested testimonial from one of our participating students, which was published in her School’s Newsletter –Mount Pleasant School Monitor. Volume 4 December 2007. Page 3.

It reminds us that what we are doing is effectively creating real lasting behavioural change both in children and their families.

Special thank you to teacher Connie McGregor for providing us with the original article.

HOW TO CHANGE THE CLIMATE FOR THE BETTER

In December I was invited to participate in a Climate Change Contest. When I started I thought it would be really difficult because there were so many things to do and it had to be done in just four weeks.

At home I had to replace light bulbs to energy efficient ones, turn off all the lights each evening for four weeks, be car-free, take shorter showers, get a low-flow shower head, turn down the thermostat in the house, eat locally grown food and even obey the idle-free law when parking.

It was pretty hard to do all of those but I got used to it and suddenly I was finished!

My dad signed my sheet and together we bought some of the things that we needed like the low-flow shower head, the energy efficient light bulbs and the foods that we needed. We even got corn from Chilliwack and vegetables from Langley.

When my dad and I went to the gas station I asked if we could check our tire pressure. When he did I wrote it down on my sheet.

I asked my dad if he wanted to join the Climate Change Challenge on line. He signed up and got lots of e-mails. One thing I learned was that air pollution makes it harder to breathe for kids with asthma. My dad thought it might be a little dangerous for me because I have asthma too.

My dad and I now try to do everything we can to keep our Climate safe.
