Arctic Ice in "Death Spiral," Is Near Record Low

The Arctic Ocean's sea ice has shrunk to its second smallest area on record, close to 2007's record-shattering low, scientists report.

The ice is in a "death spiral" and may disappear in the summers within a couple of decades, according to Mark Serreze, an Arctic climate expert at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

Each winter, sea ice fills most of the Arctic Ocean. The ice pack then melts and shrinks in the summer heat.

Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges and Decisions

The University of Copenhagen is hosting an international scientific congress on climate change. The congress is organised in cooperation with nine other universities in the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU). The main aim of the congress is to provide a synthesis of existing and emerging scientific knowledge necessary in order to make intelligent societal decisions concerning application of mitigation and adaptation strategies in response to climate change.

The BC Sustainable Energy Association can help teach your students about climate change and the many solutions available to address this problem. The Climate Change Showdown encourages team work as students collaboratively move around the game board, learning about positive and negative environmental consequences that result from individual and societal actions and behaviours. The program is free and takes 80 minutes to deliver in class.

BCSEA's Policy Committee met in late 2007 with Graham Whitmarsh, Head of the BC Government's Climate Action Secretariat. The Secretariat is the staff support group for the Cabinet Committee for Climate Action. The BC government is putting considerable effort into developing a climate change plan, including significant commitments of cabinet time, including senior ministries, and they intend non-trivial initiatives to cover all relevant sectors. For this engagement, BCSEA developed a dozen one-page policy points for our developing Climate Action Portfolio, ranging from overarching principles, such as strong climate change plan and pricing carbon, to specific detailed proposals, such as a "Phase 2" for the government's recent Standing Offer Contract.
