BCSEA Pushes for Stronger Conservation Measures
The BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) is the government body that approves or rejects the energy plans of BC Hydro and other energy utilities in BC. Powerful groups representing industry, commerce, and other interests participate in BCUC proceedings to lobby for their interests. As a BCSEA member, your support ensures that the BCUC also hears a strong voice for sustainable energy, and that environmental and sustainability issues are considered in the Commission’s decisions.
In the current review of BC Hydro’s plan to meet the province’s electricity needs for the next twenty years, BCSEA brought expert evidence and arguments that both supported BC Hydro’s new Power Smart conservation plans, and urged Hydro to go even further. Making sure that Hydro achieves improvements in energy conservation is vital to making BC’s electricity resources go farther and, ultimately, reducing fossil fuel dependence.
BCSEA has also teamed up with several groups to participate in the Commission’s current inquiry into BC’s 30-year transmission needs. This proceeding will identify zones for the development of renewable energy and assess the potential for energy exports to the US. With your support, BCSEA will be working to ensure that environmental impacts and sustainability issues are fully considered in this process.
