Celebrating South Island Local Climate Heroes
BC Sustainable Energy Association event honours local eco-celebrities who are making a real difference
On November 7, BC Sustainable Energy Association supporters Norma and David Butterfield opened their Victoria home to a very special event. Guests were treated to an intimate evening with some of Vancouver Island’s top eco-celebrities, including:
- Joe Van Belleghem – one of North America’s foremost green builders and prime mover of the Dockside Green project in Victoria;
- Andrew Weaver – the Canada Research Chair in Climate Modeling and Analysis at the University of Victoria
- Brandy Gallagher – executive director of O.U.R. EcoVillage, a 25-acre sustainability demonstration site and education centre in the Cowichan Valley
- Kevin Pegg – owner of Energy Alternatives, Canada’s longest operating renewable energy company
- Gord and Ann Baird – builders of the Eco-Sense cob house in the Highlands
The evening was an exciting reminder that – amidst the often depressing news about global climate inaction – we have some incredible good news stories right here in BC.
There are some very intelligent, forward-thinking people in this province leading the way towards a sustainable future.
You can help spread this message by hosting a similar event with your friends.
Even if you don’t know any eco-celebrities, why not find out about exciting climate initiatives with your friends, and then host a party to share that information with your friends.
As the saying goes, “If it ain’t fun, it ain’t sustainable.” So think about fun ways you can get people excited about climate action.
The BC Sustainable Energy Association would like to thank Tinhorn Creek Vineyards (Canada’s first Carbon Neutral winery!), Level Ground Trading, Happy Planet Foods, Bubby Rose’s Bakery, and Barking Dog Winery for their generous help in making this event possible.
