Kamloops Energy Fair 2010: Another success story!

The Kamloops chapter of the BCSEA has raised the bar with their fourth Annual Energy Fair.

The McArthur Island Sports Centre in North Kamloops once more hosted exhibitors showcasing all the aspects of energy you can imagine. From the earthship home to the solar energy products, the fair displayed sustainable energy literally from the ground up.

With 40 booths at the well attended show, the “local energy” was amazing. Most of the folks attending this year had their sights set on specific energy saving products and projects to assist in the greening of their homes.

A full day of engaging workshops attracted many interested participants. Much was learned about water and energy conservation, as this year’s primary focus was Green Homes, just like the Y Green Dream Home which has been built in Kamloops. Topics included green architecture and achieving net zero energy use, both inside and outside of your new or rebuilt home.

A broader audience could enjoy the Energy Fair thanks to www.yourkamloops.com who live streamed interviews with workshop presenters and visitors during the event.

The younger set was quite involved as there were three prizes awarded to winning elementary school students for their great projects about green energy. Katie, Stephen, and Helen Newton, as first prize winners, won a fun sailing and kayaking package on Shuswap Lake for a day.

A pizza party and other small prizes were awarded to the Juniper Ridge elementary school class that achieved the greatest greenhouse gas reductions in association with the Climate Change Showdown, a BCSEA and City of Kamloops joint initiative.

Four lucky fair participants won door prizes of beautiful garden boxes hand made by Joel Dyck.

BCSEA volunteers were everywhere in their distinctive green shirts to assist people from the moment they entered. Nine fair-goers were so impressed by what they saw that they took memberships in the BCSEA, and the Kamloops chapter will be all the stronger for their enthusiasm.

The Kamloops BCSEA wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to our wonderful sponsors: BC Hydro Power Smart, the City of Kamloops, and the Broadcast Centre (98.3 CIFM, CFJC TV7 and B100 CKBZ.)
