BCSEA Victoria Chapter Meeting
Burnside Gorge Community Centre, 471 Cecelia Rd. Victoria BC

Topic: Urban Backyards to Viable Food-Producing Gardens

Paula and Martin Sobie from City Harvest convert space in Victoria residents' backyards into lush, thriving gardens. For this September's chapter meeting we are pleased to have the Sobie's speak about their sustainable gardening practices, the benefits of locally growing food, and the challenges in locally producing food to build food security and reduce our carbon footprint.

From City Harvest's website (www.cityharvest.ca):

"City Harvest is a business which uses urban space in Victoria, BC—yards or vacant land—to produce hand-tended, sustainably produced vegetables to market. City Harvest is locally owned and operated by Paula Sobie and Martin Scaia and it relies on SPIN-Farming methodology, a proven organic-based growing technique that adapts commercial farming
techniques to sub-acre land masses. S-mall P-lot IN-tensive Farming can be used in rural or urban locations, yet it’s greatest environmental and social benefits are realized when it is practiced close to the population who will consume the food (in the city). Some home owners rent their yards to SPIN Farmers to transform them into beautiful gardens, however most opt to receive some of the harvest bounty as payment instead."

2008 Canadian Decentralized Energy Conference
Calgary Telus Convention Centre, Calgary AB

Canada's energy industry is transitioning into a balanced supply mix of centralized and decentralized energy (DE). DE is energy generation at or near the point of use, irrespective of size, technology or fuel used - both off-grid and on-grid. DE brings improved efficiency through reduced line losses and thermal efficiency gains. However, to reach its maximum potential, the DE industry must be supported by up-to-date energy management solutions. Energy policy and regulation along with grid integration are two primary areas of concern. They affect all industry stakeholders and several aspects of the value chain (i.e., utilities, independent power producers, governments, regulators, manufacturers, housing industry).
